Flowers have been bought as gifts for centuries, and with them, traditions have been created for different types. Some flowers represent love, and others represent respect for someone who has passed. If you want to send someone a gift, flowers are rarely a bad choice, but it's useful to know what flowers are traditionally sent for different occasions.

Carnation

Carnations are often associated with the gods, and their very name comes from Greek mythology. Their scientific name is Dianthus, which comes from the words 'dios’ and ‘anthos' which mean Zeus and flower in ancient Greek. Carnations generally symbolize love, beauty, and pride, with a pink carnation specifically symbolizing the love of a mother. For this reason, they are a common gift for Mother's Day.

Daisy

Daisy is one of the most common and well-known flowers you'll see, and for a good reason. They are a beautiful flower and are often used to represent innocence and purity. They also symbolize new beginnings, which makes them an ideal housewarming gift or for someone starting a new chapter in their life.

Gardenia

Gardenias, along with roses, are most commonly associated with romance and were often gifted to a secret love. Gardenias are full of positive emotions and are often seen to represent joy, purity, or sweetness. If you're starting a new relationship with someone, a bunch of Gardenias from 1 stop Florists could be an ideal gift.

Lilac

You often see lilacs being gifted in purples and whites, with the purple lilac representing youth and innocence and white lilacs symbolizing humility. Purple lilacs like gardenias are also often gifted in a new relationship and represent young love. Lilacs are also traditionally given to a partner on the 8th anniversary of a relationship.

Lily

Lilies are one of the most popular flowers to gift due to their beautiful flowers. White lilies are often used for bouquets for brides as they symbolize virginity and modesty. They are also a popular flower to have in the house around Easter, as the white lily represents the Virgin Mary at this time of the year.

Orchid

This is another very popular flower for its unique flowers that give a sense of beauty. In China, the orchid is often used to symbolize children. The orchid is also a symbol for many of its own qualities, such as femininity, refinement, and maturity. For this reason, it's a traditional flower to gift on the 14th anniversary of a wedding.

Rose

Possibly the most popular flower of any, the rose is without equal in its representation of love. The meaning of roses does differ depending on their color, though. Red roses are the classic representation of deep love and are often gifted for Valentine's Day. White roses represent friendship, while yellow roses are for friendship and are a more platonic flower. Pink roses are given when you're expressing thanks or gratitude, and dark purple roses have a regal connotation.
