Members of the Devon Federation of Young Farmers Clubs have been participating in a number of competitions during the past couple months.

The ‘Just a Minute’ speaking competition final was held at The Waie Inn, with a total of 12 teams from across the county taking part.  An entertaining night was had by both competitors and spectators, as members on the panel were challenged to speak for one minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition on a topic given to them.  The results were declared on the night, and after a tough final the senior winners were East Devon Group consisting of Mark Glanvill, Katie Maynard, Laura Gould and Sam Tolchard, closely followed by Exe Valley Group in second place, and Haldon Group in third.  Matt Verney was named the best speaker in the senior competition.  The junior competition was also held on the same evening, with Haldon Group coming first  with the team consisting of Sadie Lyon, Matt Holmes, Francesca Risdale and Albert Woollard.  Tarka Group was placed second and North Devon Group came third.  Siobhon Nichols was named the best speaker in the junior competition.  The junior team to represent Devon at the South West Final are Sophie Grills, Siobhon Nichols, Bradley Howels and Rebekah Hoskin, with Ben Hutchins and Abi Gibson in reserve.  The Devon YFC Junior Reading and Situations Vacant Final will be held on Thursday 13 February at The Waie Inn.

The county final of the disco dancing competition was held at North Molten Sports Centre on Friday 24 January, with five teams entering in total.  The standard of dancing was exceptionally high, and it was obvious to the large crowd and support of family and friends that the members had taken a lot of time creating an original dance and committing many months to rehearse.  The results were announced on the night, and Cruwys Morchard representing Exe Valley Group was placed in first, with Tarka Group in second and Haldon Group in third.  After hearing the results, Sara Rolle Chairman of Cruwys Morchard YFC was speechless, she said: “The club is very proud and happy to of won and we are really looking forward to the South West Area Round of the Competition in March.  The club would like to thank Lynnette Parkhouse and Sue Arthurs for all their support and help throughout.”

Nearly 90 members have recently returned from Tignes in France after a brilliant week on the Devon YFC Ski Trip. Trip organiser Will Dracup said: “The skiing was amazing, everyone had a brilliant time and made it such a memorable trip.”  Will is already in talks about organising a trip for next year!

Congratulations to Francesca Risdale of Bow YFC who has been selected to travel on the Tall Ships Sailing Adventure trip, organised by the NFYFC travel programme in July.

Clubs across Devon are currently rehearsing for the Entertainments, Member of the Year and Choir competition, where the cunty finals will be held on Saturday 1 March at Exmouth Pavilion. Ttickets can be purchased from the Devon YFC office 01392 272189
