Newsletter gives dog owners ‘paws’ for thought

East Devon District Council is doggedly continuing to encourage responsible pet ownership in the district.

Following a successful series of annual dogs’ days out, where owners and their best friends could enjoy a social gathering whilst learning more about getting the most from their pets, the council’s environmental health team has produced an occasional newsletter covering many aspects of dog ownership.

And to celebrate the launch of The Daily Wag, the council has donated some of the proceeds of the doggie events to two charities that care for and re-home unwanted animals.

Cheques for £800 were recently presented to representatives of Ferne Animal Sanctuary in Chard and ARC Animal Rescue Centre in Ottery St Mary.

Ferne provides a refuge for a wide range of domestic and farm animals, including dogs and cats. ARC concentrates on rescuing and re-homing dogs.

The donations came from the proceeds of fees paid by dog owners to have their pets chipped at council-run open days.

The Daily Wag newsletter contains essential information for anyone who owns a dog – or is contemplating getting one.

There are reminders that there is a lot to think about when you decide to share your home with a dog – not only whether you are able to give the commitment required but also what size and breed of dog is most suitable for your family and lifestyle.

There is also essential information about obedience training, feeding and exercise, pet insurance, leaving animals alone at home or in hot cars, collars, tagging and chipping and, of course, the perennial issue of fouling pavements and public places.

Written in the same style as The Seagull Gazette, environmental health’s previous guidance newsletter, The Daily Wag is available from a number of outlets throughout the district – or it can be posted or emailed (electronic version) by applying through the council’s website.

Recommending the newsletter to all the district’s dog owners, Councillor Iain Chubb, cabinet member for environment, said: “Everyone’s pet hate is dog mess. Whilst we provide facilities for owners to bag up the mess and put it in bins that we empty, the weak link in the chain is the irresponsible dog owner. The newsletter says thanks to those who do pick up and reminds those who don’t that they should be doing so.

“I’m sure we’re barking up the RIGHT tree with this publication, which is part of our ongoing commitment to informing dog-owners in the district of their obligations. Doing the right thing is best for the dog, the owner and for the rest of East Devon’s residents and visitors.

“The Daily Wag, as its title suggests, is a fairly light-hearted look at a serious subject and we hope that it will not only be a good read but will deliver some positive results in improving responsible dog ownership in East Devon”.
