Occupy Exeter one year on presents the Moneyless Manifesto

Occupy Exeter is one year old and to mark the anniversary a talk is being given at 7.30pm on Wednesday 14th November at The Mint Methodist Church, Exeter by Mark Boyle, also known as the Moneyless Man. Mark is an inspirational speaker who  has  opted out of consumerism by living entirely without money for the past couple of years.

Mark became concerned about the rise of consumerism and the part he played personally in keeping going unethical trading practices such as sweatshop labour used by profitable companies producing goods very cheaply for the west. He decided that the only way to not contribute to exploitation was to opt out of using money completely. What started as a year-long experiment has now turned into a way of life.

Mark lives in a caravan on a farm and pays the rent by working part-time on the farm. He grows his own vegetables and skip-dives for useable food thrown away by supermarkets each day. He forages, cooks on an outdoor rocket stove and uses solar panels to power his laptop. Mark has set up an online group called Justfortheloveofit which aims to encourage people to share goods and services without any direct reward.

Mark has just published his second book The Moneyless Manifesto and copies will be available at the talk along with his first book The Moneyless Man.  Even if you have no intention of managing without money Mark can share some of his ideas on how to live a more satisfying life without great expense.

Alison Williams, a member of Occupy Exeter said “in these times of austerity, Mark Boyle offers an alternative. He’s put down a marker, he’s shown that it’s possible to live without money, so maybe the rest of  us can reduce our dependency a bit “

The talk is being held at The Mint Methodist Church, Fore Street in Exeter at 7.30pm on Wednesday 14th November. Admission is free but donations are warmly welcomed to cover the expenses of hiring the hall and the costs of Mark’s public transport to the event.
