County Sport Partnership Active Devon have put out a call for all Games Makers and Torch Bearers from this year’s London 2012 Games to get in contact with them to ensure they receive a ticket to the Devon Sport Makers Christmas Party, which will be held on Thursday 6th December from 6pm onwards at Sandy Park Conference Centre in Exeter.

Games Makers and Torch Bearers from across the county inspired a generation of volunteers to sign up to the national Sport Makers scheme, who have gone out into their community to support, deliver and organise grassroots sport.

Active Devon want all Games Makers and Torch Bearers to join these volunteers at the event to pass on the baton, share their knowledge, enthusiasm and experience and to celebrate a fantastic year of volunteering in sport. The event will offer party goers plenty of fun including a draw, goody bags and the chance to meet a London 2012 athlete.

Sport Maker Coordinator James Bogue said “We are excited at the prospect of pulling together so many sports volunteers under one roof. When we have invited Games Makers to other events we have run through the year, we have noticed that they are quite an established community in their own right, still very much in contact with each other post Olympic Games and very keen to continue volunteering in Sport.”

He continues “We also acknowledge the fantasic job that Games Makers and Torch Bearers have done in inspiring sports volunteers within our community and thought what better way to celebrate such a great year for volunteering and give volunteers the chance to meet up and share stories than to have a Christmas party.”

Active Devon Communications Manager Helen Pope added “as James has said, quite a few of the Games Makers have already set up an online group and as such we have been able to make contact with them, but we are certain there are hundreds of Games Makers and Torch Bearers we haven’t yet been able to reach, which is why we are urging them to make contact with us, so they don’t miss out on what promises to be a great evening.”

Active Devon aims to inspire 900 people in Devon to get involved, with each of them spending at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities.

Sport Makers are the people who directly make sport happen at a local level. Some Sport Makers will organise sport for themselves and their friends, colleagues and neighbours. Others won’t be taking part themselves, but will be doing all those other things that make the sporting activity possible.

These Sport Makers will organise and support hundreds of thousands of new hours of grassroots sport across the country. While doing so, they will keep the Olympic and Paralympic values alive in every community.
