A new project offering one-to-one support to carers and family members of people with drink or drug problems is looking to recruit more volunteers in Exeter and East Devon.

A joint initiative between Devon Carers and Recoverylink CIC, You First is a peer-support buddying scheme that matches people who are struggling to cope with caring for a family member, relative or friend with drink or drug problems with someone who has experienced similar circumstances but found the resilience to manage their own lives successfully despite the difficulties.

You First is keen to hear from those with first-hand, lived experience who could offer their empathy and support to a group of carers who often don’t seek help because of the shame and stigma associated with addiction in the family or home.

Once introduced, the buddy and carer meet at mutually convenient times, usually in an informal community setting such as a coffee shop, and keep in touch by telephone and text.

Full training is provided, and runs one morning a week over four weeks, with the next course starting on Wednesday 26 February and then successive Wednesdays 5, 12, 19  March, at Exeter Community Centre, St Davids Hill.

In addition, the project encourages clients to recognise themselves as carers in their own right, with a designated Carer Support Work available to advise and enable them to access the full range of services available through Devon Carers, including Health and Wellbeing checks and Flexible Breaks Grants.
