People urged to protect their homes

People living close to the River Exe in Topsham and any other parts of Exeter that are at risk of flooding from tidal waters are being warned to protect their properties from an expected tidal surge tomorrow morning (Friday 3 January). The Environment Agency has issued severe flood warnings for coastal flooding for Friday morning. From around 6am and throughout the morning, waves are expected to reach up to 5m in height and combined with heavy rainfall and high winds, flooding may occur. For more information people are being advised to visit the Environment website www.environment-agency.gov.uk Exeter City Council has made sand bags available to householders in and around Topsham. These can be collected from the Matthews Hall car park. The City Council has already deployed a team of workers to Topsham to help local people. The Council is urging anyone whose homes may be at risk to protect their properties and any other possessions that may come into contact with flood water, such as cars parked close to the River. The Council is also advising people to stay away from the water's edge in the areas expected to be affected.
