These dramatic images tweeted by Exeter's Prospect Inn show the River Exe close to bursting its banks.

Businesses and residents in the area were put on flood alert last night as torrential rain fell on already swollen waterways and saturated ground.

The pub used Twitter to keep people up to date with events during last night and into this morning.

Shortly after midnight, a message read "Have just had a call from Floodline to say flooding on Exeter Quay is imminent!!!"

And at 5.30am they tweeted "It is still rising...it has now reached the cobbled road, so still a way to go before it reaches anyone here!"

Many people, including the emergency services, turned to twitter last night for updates.
