Refugee rally attracts 600 supporters
Six hundred people gathered outside Exeter Cathedral this Saturday 12th September, in response to the escalating European refugee crisis. The shocking pictures of children dying in the Mediterranean, and reports of treacherous journeys being undertaken to escape war and persecution, stirred the hearts and minds of the people of Exeter to help.
The compassion rally was called to show the government that refugees are welcome in Exeter and to ask the government to do more to help refugees. A petition asking Exeter City Council to provide homes for 50 refugee families, signed by 1313 people, was presented to Hannah Packham Exeter City Councillor for St. Thomas.
Many people showed their support by donating money to the local charity Refugee Support Devon so that it can continue it's work with refugees. The local charity supports refugees and their families to ensure that they are given the protection they need, are able to settle successfully in the local community, can reach their full potential, rebuild their lives in safety and dignity and be treated with respect and understanding, as equal members of society.
Speakers at the event included Hannah Packham Exeter City Councillor for St. Thomas, Olivia Harker from Exeter City of Sanctuary, June Marshall a trustee for Refugee Support Devon and Baraa Ehssan Kouja a Syrian speaking about his experiences of working with refugees in Syria.
Christine Singfield one of the organisers said, 'It is amazing to see so many people turn out at such short notice. It shows that the people of Exeter are caring, compassionate, and want to help our fellow human beings in need. I truly feel proud to be part of this community today'.
The UN refugee agency estimates that over 320,000 people have crossed the Mediterranean since the start of the year, undertaking treacherous journeys from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, and other countries torn apart by war and persecution, but for some this desperate journey will be their last. Almost 3,000 people have drowned trying to reach safety in Europe. Further information: http://www.unhcr.org.uk/
