River users get new defibrillator access
Teign Corinthian Yacht Club (TCYC), Teignbridge District Council and the Teign Estuary and Coastal Partnership have worked together to install a new defibrillator close to the quay side and slipway at Polly Steps, Teignmouth.
The proposal and main fund raising for the equipment came about through the TCYC following the sudden death of one of its members at this site. Supported by family, friends and Teign Heartbeat, TCYC raised the funds for two defibrillator units - the other being based at Coombe Cellars where the club’s dinghy section is based.
Jane Cumbley, whose husband David suffered a fatal heart attack at Polly Steps, said: “Several years ago the family was devastated by the loss of David during the annual craning out at Polly Steps. Two years later we also lost his brother, John, in similar circumstances but on a hockey pitch. We’ll never know if a defibrillator could have saved them but this unit could give someone that precious chance of life”.
With a clear line of sight from boats on the water and users of the carpark, the new unit in its striking red cabinet is designed to be both highly visible and easily accessible.
Cllr Humphrey Clemens, Teignbridge District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Coastal Management, said: “The Coastal Partnership was keen to help fund the installation of the new defibrillator unit at Teignbridge’s main launching point, providing convenient access to emergency equipment for those on or around the water. We are delighted to see this life-saving kit being unveiled and whilst I hope no-one ever needs to use it in anger, it is reassuring to know the kit is available if needed”.
The Teign Estuary and Coastal Partnership is led by Teignbridge District Council and promotes the integrated coastal management, access and economic development of the estuary and the open coast between Torbay and the Exe Estuary.
The Partnership leads or is actively involved in economic development initiatives for the area, water recreation, coastal defence, footpaths, slipways and coastal access, fishing and shellfisheries, conservation, the Templer Way and Stover Canal, Taste of the Teign, bathing water standards and operates a Small grants fund to encourage community groups to get involved in the management of this charismatic area.
