The Met Office has issued a yellow warning as windy weather is set to hit Devon.

While already windy today, winds are expected to increase further during tomorrow, becoming very gusty with a risk of gales over exposed coasts and hills.

With showers and longer spells of rain also forecast over the next few days, the public should be aware of the potential for some minor disruption to outdoor activities and difficult driving conditions.

The warning is valid from 6am-9pm tomorrow (Monday).

The Exeter-based agency’s Chief forecaster said: “Winds are already strong in many places though Sunday. However, west to south-westerly winds are expected to increase further during Monday.

“Inland gusts of 40-45 mph are possible, whilst gusts may exceed 50 mph along the north coasts of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, and also Bristol Channel coasts of south Wales.

“There is some uncertainty over the peak wind strength and also the extent of the strong winds, but given a greater number of people engaged in outdoor activities at this time of year there is a medium likelihood of some minor disruption, with driving conditions perhaps difficult for towing vehicles.”

The five day regional forecast is as follows:

This Evening and Tonight:
It will be a rather cloudy night, with outbreaks of rain or showers across much of the UK. However, it should remain largely dry across the far north of Scotland, with clear spells. Gusty winds across the far southwest.

Monday:
Often cloudy with further rain or heavy showers, the latter slow-moving across Northern England. Brighter in the south with strong winds, especially across coastal areas where gales are likely.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:
Overnight rain will push southwards during Tuesday and break up to give bright spells and showers. Remaining windy for a time, before winds ease later. Generally drier and brighter thereafter.
