Exmouth’s Christmas spirit has been given an extra festive boost with a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the heart of the town.

Exmouth town’s Christmas display on the Strand has been lit up with new fairy lights and festive decorations, thanks to local businessman Marcus Di-Vincenzo, from solar energy firm, MIG Renewable Technologies.

The tree which is placed in the town centre each year is usually dressed with a simple set of fairy lights, but is always left looking a little bit bare, according to the renewable energy enthusiast.

Marcus has also surprised the Exmouth Rotary Club with a donation of £45, after reading about their unexpected bill to run electric cable for their lights on the annual Magnolia Centre Christmas tree.

Marcus said: “Having lived in Exmouth for 24 years, I have always looked at the Exmouth Christmas tree and thought it could do with a bit of TLC. It’s such a focal point for the festive season, but it really didn’t have that Christmas sparkle.

He continued: “This year, I decided to give something back to the town by sponsoring the Christmas tree. We gathered our staff together as a bit of a team bonding exercise and decorated the tree tastefully so that it really stands out. I have great plans for Exmouth and this is just a taste of the great things to come for the town. Next year we will personally pick the tree and all the decorations that go on it.”

Talking about the Exmouth Rotary Club donation he said: “Charging the Rotary club to turn on their Christmas lights really doesn’t fit with the festive spirit. They do an amazing amount for our local community for which I am really grateful, covering their costs was the least I could do.” A spokesman for the club was delighted with the contribution.

Marcus, who lives on Cranford Avenue, owns and runs two successful security firms as well as MIG Renewable Technologies, based at Liverton Business Park, which was launched earlier this year.

Suzanne Birkett from Exmouth Town Council said: “We are delighted with MIG’s contribution to the seasonal display this year. In the past we have suffered let downs and disappointments with Exmouth Christmas lights, so it really is wonderful to have an extra special tree in place this year for 2014. Marcus has set the standard very high for next year!”

The tree stands at 17 feet tall and was supplied by Gala Lights. Marcus plans to go even bigger and better for Christmas 2015 and is encouraging locals to get involved by contributing ideas for colour schemes and decorations.
