The only city in England to have underground passages, visitors can visit and explore underneath the city for under £10. Initially designed to bring clean drinking water into the city, the tunnels have plenty of stories to tell. Although hundreds of years old, they have now been reinforced for visitors to take guided tours to learn what has happened through the years. Tours have taken place since the 1930s, so there is a wealth of knowledge among the guides.
Exeter became a religious town in the Middle Ages and then was transformed into the centre of the wool trade during the industrial revolution. Since the 1940s, it has been rebuilt as a hub of education. Because of these different hats that the city has worn through the years, there are plenty of various sites to take in, which makes for an enjoyable day in the city.
