South Devon UTC set to launch new Healthcare curriculum at virtual Open Evening
Marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11th February 2021), South Devon University Technical College (UTC) is inviting prospective students to find out more about its new Healthcare curriculum at its next virtual Open Evening.
Newton Abbot’s pioneering technical college is hosting the evening via Microsoft Teams on Thursday 11th February 2021 from 6pm to 7pm. Young people who have a keen interest in Healthcare and Engineering are urged to sign up for the event to explore what a career path in these key employment sectors could look like.
Throughout the evening, attendees can expect to hear from South Devon UTC’s teachers, current students, alumni and employer partners on what an education at South Devon UTC can offer. The online event also gives prospective students a chance to go on a tour of the college’s state-of-the-art building on Kingsteignton Road, all from the comfort of their homes.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is held annually on 11th February and aims to achieve full and equal access to science for women and girls. In the UK, the numbers do look promising. Whilst it is still vital that schools and colleges such as South Devon UTC continue to encourage women into science, data from 2019 shows that over the last decade, the number of women in science professional roles has risen by over 5,000 (source: Wise).
South Devon UTC will continue to champion women in science at its February Open Evening and throughout the day with a series of interactive experiences led by both Health and Engineering employer-partners.
Claire Plumb, Principal of South Devon UTC, said: “We are delighted to announce that our next Open Evening will introduce prospective students to our Healthcare and Engineering curriculums, as well as sharing details on our science and environmental specialisms. Coinciding with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, our Open Evening offers a great opportunity for prospective students to find out more on how they can achieve the best start to a career in Healthcare or Engineering. The economic strengths of the Torbay area are forecast to lie in the growth of these two key employment sectors. This holds great promise for those who choose to specialise in these skills and brings prospects of sound employment in fulfilling and rewarding jobs for the future generation.”
Claire continued: “I look forward to meeting prospective students virtually on Thursday 11th February. We are unique in that we can provide so many opportunities for our students to experience an employer-driven curriculum. We have recently announced Babcock International as our latest employer partner. They join the likes of the Environment Agency, South West Water and MB Aerospace. All these South West businesses contribute to our curriculum and offer our students work experience placements, setting young people up for a successful career after they leave us.”
The pioneering college offers an innovative model of learning for students that provides a professional academic and technical education aimed to ‘develop a new generation of engineers, scientists and environmentalists’. Unlike many other colleges, South Devon UTC has a higher proportion of its students study triple science compared to the national average.
As a member of the Heart of the South West Careers Hub, the South Devon UTC curriculum includes all year-round work experience opportunities and employability skills development. This is a key focus for students at South Devon UTC which results in an extremely high success rate for students achieving their further destination placements in higher level apprenticeships with local employers, University or with the Armed Forces.
