St Margaret's parents take to social media
Parents of pupils at St Margaret's School in Exeter have taken to social media in an attempt to stave off closure.
On Friday staff were told that a lack of students meant the operation was no longer financially viable.
In a statement William Long, Chairman of Governors at St Margaret’s School said: “A three year plan was put in place with a view to steering the school to profitability, but after the entrance examination, it became clear that this was not achievable, so the difficult decision was taken to close the school at the end of the 2013 summer term.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank acting headmaster Lee Bergin and all of our teaching and support staff for their hard work as well as Woodard (the educational charity which is our ultimate owner) for their support.
“Our pupils remain our utmost concern during this difficult time. Everything possible will be done to minimise disruption and ensure they continue to receive the same high standards of education and emotional support that St Margaret’s has always provided for the remainder of the academic year.”
But some parents have said they will do everything within their power to keep the school open.
Many have taken to Facebook and Twitter to rally support and organise meetings.
BUBB1ES said on Twitter 'St Margaret's offers something unique in the city. Can't let it go without a fight'.
Gary Shrimpton said: 'Shocked, saddened and appalled at the closure of St Margaret's. But mostly angry - no, livid - on behalf of pupils, staff and parents.'
Charlotte Fleming wrote: 'It's dreadful for all, I swerve between anger and upset.'
Meanwhile the SAVE ST. Margaret's School Facebook page now has more than 350 likes.
