Suspect package detonated in Exeter city centre
Dozens of people were evacuated from pubs and clubs after a suspect package was found near the junction of Fore Street and High Street in Exeter.
The alarm was raised after a rucksack was spotted near the Chevalier at 11.30pm on Monday night (29 May).
Police officers attended the area and inspected the rucksack, which had been abandoned in the corner of a bus stop.
Armed response sergeant Harry Tangye tweeted: "Sus package in Exeter city centre therefore Fore At, South St, North St closed. Log 1100 29th ARVs on cordons. Please find alternative route."
He later added: "EOD carried out a controlled explosion at about 0130 on the abandoned Ruck sack. Found to be harmless."
A spokesman for Devon & Cornwall Police said: “Local cordons were put in place and a nearby properties were evacuated.
“A co-ordinated operation ensued with the assistance of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal [EOD] team, and local armed officers.
“The suspicious package was disabled by way of mechanical controlled explosion with minimal disruption and an inspection of the rucksack confirmed it contained items of clothing.
“Police would like to thank the local community for their support and patience whilst officers carried out the successful operation which confirmed the rucksack was not viable.”
The public are advised not to be alarmed but to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to police.
