Take care on Devon's roads on Christmas Day
Devon County Council is urging people to take care on Devon’s roads tomorrow morning (Wednesday 25 December).
The authority’s gritters will be out on most of Devon’s main gritting routes from around midnight tonight as freezing conditions are expected from around 5am-9am.
Road surface temperatures are due to drop to around -1.4C, and with a lot of surface water still on parts of the road network, conditions may be icy. Untreated surfaces could be hazardous.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “We want to make sure everyone has a safe Christmas Day so please take extra care if travelling first thing. With the amount of water still around and sub-zero temperatures, ice may be a problem in the morning. We can’t treat all of our roads and untreated roads may well be icy.”
The County Council is reminding people of the following advice:
- Never assume a road has been salted. Remember that showers or rain will wash salt off roads leaving them prone to ice, and in extreme cold even salting will not stop ice from forming;
- Allow additional time for your journey and reduce your speed;
- Drive with care and according to the conditions.
