Topsham gas works to begin

Wales & West Utilities is kicking off the new year with a gas pipe investment scheme in the Bridge Hill area of Topsham.

The £105,000 investment work, which begins next week (21 January), will involve upgrading 70 metres of old metal gas pipes to new plastic ones and will help keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area so that people are kept safe and warm for generations to come.

Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Devon County Council and it has been agreed that 2-way traffic lights will be in place throughout the seven-week scheme. Barring any engineering difficulties, the work is expected to be complete by 8 March.

A road closure along Clyst Bridge, from outside The Bridge Inn to Fishers Bridge Mills, will be in place during the weekends of 2/3 and 9/10 February. A diversion route will be clearly signposted ahead of the closure.

Wales & West Utilities Operations Controller, Matthew Phillips, is managing the work and said: “We know that working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.”

Cllr Rob Newby, Exeter City Councillor for Topsham, added: “These works are vital to secure the future of the gas network in the local area but unfortunately, in order to complete them, traffic management plans need to be in place. During this time, I would ask local people to please remain patient.

“I will be regularly communicating with the Wales & West Utilities team to understand the progress being made and will do all that I can to work with them to keep the inconvenience to local people to a minimum.”
