Drivers advised to plan ahead as A30 resurfacing work resumes in Devon

Drivers using the A30 in Devon are advised to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys ahead of work starting on the second phase of a resurfacing scheme between Fingle Glen and Alphington early in the new year.

The National Highways scheme, to install low-noise surfacing, new lining and studs, started in October and the westbound carriageway work, between the Alphington and Fingle Glen junctions, was completed on 16 December with all traffic management removed for the Christmas break.

Traffic management arrangements for the eastbound work will start tonight (Tuesday, 3 January) with full eastbound overnight closures in place tonight and tomorrow from 8pm to 6am, with 24/7 lane 2 closures in place eastbound and westbound from tomorrow to 9 January.

The eastbound carriageway will also be closed overnight on Thursday, 5 January and Friday, 6 January, from 11pm to 6am, and midnight to 6am on 8 January and 14 February. 

A 24/7 contraflow will be in operation between 9 January and 14 February, along with 50mph speed restrictions and average speed cameras, with overnight eastbound closures in place again from 14 February to 3 March, the scheme’s scheduled completion date.

During the overnight work clearly signed diversions will be in place, with eastbound traffic diverted via local roads from the Fingle Glen junction to rejoin the A30 at the Alphington junction.

The westbound carriageway will also be closed overnight tonight and tomorrow (3 and 4 January) from 11pm to 6am and Thursday and Friday (8pm-6am), and during those closures the westbound diversion will operate in reverse, via the Alphington junction.

The programme of work is weather dependent and any further closures will be communicated in advance to drivers. 

Heather Lang, National Highways’ Head of Scheme Delivery in the South West, said: “We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating but we are doing our utmost to minimise disruption during both contraflow and overnight working.

“We are anticipating some delays to people’s journeys, we advise people to add a little extra time for their journeys and in the meantime we thank all drivers in advance for their co-operation and patience while this essential work’s carried out.”
