Woman in serious condition following traffic collision on Heavitree Road

Update 2 April: Police have reported that the pedestrian involved in this incident is said to be in a critical condition.

The driver, a 93-year-old man from Teignmouth was uninjured, whilst the 96-year-old female passenger sustained a broken arm and a slight head injury.

Officers have repeated their appeal for witnesses of the collision to contact them 101, quoting reference 251 of 28/03/13.

Update: 4pm 28/03/13: A 26-year-old female pedestrian has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a collision with a car.

As a result of the collision, she was trapped between a wall and the vehicle, a blue Honda Jazz.

She sustained multiple injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter.

The fire service freed an elderly man and woman from the Honda after removing the roof of the vehicle.

The female passenger sustained a broken arm and has been taken to hospital. The male driver was uninjured.

The road has now openend.

Officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Team have begun a detailed investigation and are carrying out work at the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision and anyone with information is asked to contact 101, quoting reference 251 of 28/03/13.

Update: 2.30pm 28/03/13: Fire Control was contacted by Ambulance Control requesting assistance at a road traffic collision in which people were trapped in the vehicle and one person trapped between the vehicle and a wall.  Appliances from Exeter Danes Castle and Middlemoor were mobilised.

On arrival the crews confirmed that there were two persons trapped in the car and one person trapped against the wall by the car.

The female person trapped against the wall was released by the crews and taken to hospital by land ambulance.  An additional ambulance was requested as a passer-by who assisted with the casualty was suffering from shock. He was treated by the fire service crews using a MARS resuscitator.

Hydraulic rescue equipment and small tools were got to work to release the people in the car.  A female passenger was released first, suffering injuries to her torso and legs and removed to hospital by ambulance.  A male was then released uninjured.

The Ambulance service reports that several resources were deployed to the scene, including three rapid response vehicles and two double-manned ambulances. One male and one female from the car were admitted to RD& E along with a further female patient who was admitted with life threatening injuries.

The B3183 Heavitree Road inbound has opened, but outbound remains closed. There is queueing traffic in both directions between the Paris Street Roundabout and the Gladstone Road junction. Drivers of lorries and large vehicles are recommended to use Topsham or Pinhoe Roads to enter the City.

Earlier: The B3183 Heavitree Road in Exeter is closed with delays in both directions between the B3212 Western Way junction and the Gladstone Road junction, because of an accident involving vehicle and pedestrian at midday today (28 March). Police, Fire and Ambulance services were called to the scene following the report of a road traffic collision.

A woman is reported to have serious injuries following the incident.

The road has been closed at the bottom of Paris Street and Gladstone Road and motorists are asked to avoid the area for the time being.
