Devon loves rugby, it's official!
More than 40 clubs across the county offer coaching and play opportunities for every age group from tots through to women's and men's teams. 11,000 of us regularly support the premiership winning Exeter Chiefs. There's something for everyone.
And with all this comes Wooden Spoon, the children's charity of rugby.
Rugby players and supporters are a friendly and caring bunch who also use the power of rugby to raise funds to support local children's projects. Since the year 2000, Wooden Spoon Devon has raised £1.35million and supported more than 30 projects across the county, helping make a difference to children and young people facing disability and disadvantage.
This year's projects include Exeter Hawks Wheelchair Rugby Club, raising funds for four specialist wheelchairs to allow the team to train and play every week. Another is Sirona Therapeutic Horsemanship based near Newton Abbot. Specially trained therapists there use horse-based educational sessions to work with young people for whom conventional interventions have failed. They desperately need a new classroom to help improve the invaluable service they offer.
The next Wooden Spoon fundraiser is on 8th September, a fun golf day at Dainton Park Golf Club, Newton Abbot TQ12 5TN.
Tee times are from 8am and there will be food, music, prizes and entertainment throughout the day. Entry is £180 for a team of four, £45 for individuals. Everyone is welcome to join in and every penny raised will be spent on children's projects in Devon.
