Search kicks off for greatest captain in history of football league
Prostate Cancer UK – the Official Charity Partner of The Football League - has launched a national campaign to find the greatest captain in the history of The Football League and is calling on football fans to vote for their favourite skipper.
The newly extended three-year charity partnership between Prostate Cancer UK and the league aims to reach over 16 million fans across the terraces, raising awareness of the disease which affects 1 in 8 men sometime in their life and kills over 10,000 men a year.
This season, the 125th anniversary of The Football League, fans are being urged put aside their rivalries on the pitch and join ‘Men United’ in the battle against prostate cancer. The new super team sets out to tackle the disease head on by encouraging mates, brothers, dads and granddads to wise up the disease and take action.
Top football bloggers from over 60 football league clubs have been enlisted in the search for the ‘Greatest Captain in the History of The Football League’ and from today Exeter City FC fans can vote for Shaun Taylor– for the prestigious title. Fans have until Tuesday 20th August to cast their vote before the top five captains are unveiled and entered into the final nationwide vote to find the greatest captain ever in the history of the league.
Top football blogger, Olie Heptinstall from Exeter City podcast, Grecian Talk, said: “After careful consideration of all the great captains over the years at Exeter, I would like to see Shaun Taylor voted the greatest captain in the history of the 72 Football League clubs. Taylor is a Grecians hero for his bottle, charisma and leadership – all the essential skills to be considered a club legend and worthy captain of any team. He'd be a great figurehead for ‘Men United’.
“Men United v Prostate Cancer sets out to unite the football community in the fight against prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men, to inspire a new movement in men’s health. By voting today you can help make Shaun Taylor the first captain of Men United, and furthermore show your support for the cause.”
