City get ready to face fellow promotion-hopefuls Northampton Town.
Preview: Exeter City v Northampton
Today's guests at St James Park are former Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd’s promotion-hopefuls Northampton Town. With about a quarter of the 2012/13 season left to play it is still no clearer who will be going up automatically or via the play-offs to npower League 1, though this crunch match may have a significant bearing on Exeter City’s chances. The Cobblers travel to the South West boasting of their high team-IQ (defender Clarke Carlisle was named ‘Britain’s Brainiest Footballer’ in 2002) but the Grecians are equally proud to have the trendiest manager across the Football League.
Never a team to stick around, Northampton hold the record for the shortest time taken to be promoted from the bottom tier to the top tier and relegated back down to the bottom again (just nine years!) Not to lay into the Cobblers any further, but their record against Manchester United in the FA Cup nowhere near matches the Grecians’ – in 1970 they lost 8-2, with six goals from George Best. Fortunately for Exeter, Northampton’s top all-time goal-scorer Jack English (with 143) last found the net in 1959, but nobody can question the credentials of Boothroyd’s men who currently lie fourth-placed, just a point behind Burton Albion in third.
