Event inspires young rugby enthusiasts
A three-day rugby training camp held by Exeter Chiefs and Newton Abbot has been hailed an ‘amazing success’.
More than 90 five to 14 year olds took part in the three-day Rugby Training Camp held at Newton Abbot Rugby Club, in the Easter holidays.
Boys and girls took part, learning rugby and multi-sport skills provided by qualified rugby coaches and 1st XV players. The training camp culminated with Exeter Chiefs star players Tom Johnson and Gareth Steenson getting involved on the final day, thanks to the Premiership side’s sponsor Centrax.
Young enthusiasts were presented with awards for their hard work, determination and improvement by Tom and Gareth, while all attendees were also given t-shirts and Exeter Chief goodie bags.
Families and siblings of the budding rugby players were then treated to an afternoon of family fun with a chance to meet the players, enjoy a bouncy castle and free barbecue.
Phil Burford, Junior Camp Organiser at Newton Abbot Rugby Club, said: “With Rugby World Cup fever hitting Exeter this summer, we were delighted to host this special Easter event with the Exeter Chiefs. The kids were amazing and all got involved. It was great to see such a huge turnout.”
Exeter Chiefs flanker Tom Johnson said: “It is great to see so many young boys and girls have such enthusiasm for sport. Rugby in the South West has certainly become more and more popular and to be able to get involved with the camp and try and encourage the youngsters is a real honour. It was a pleasure to pass on top tips and experience. The players of the future are there at grassroots level, which is why training events like this are so important.”
