Get your skates on for Roller Derby Exeter

On Sunday (20 July) Westpoint Exeter will be invaded by a whole host of the South West’s best Roller Derby teams for the final of the SW:UK Roller Derby League.

The full-contact, predominantly female sport played on quad roller skates is among the fastest growing sports in the UK and has taken off particularly in the South West. SW:UK Roller Derby is a regional collection of eight Roller Derby teams from South West England who compete against each other regularly including Exeter’s own South West Angels of Terror, Devon Clotted Screamers, Bristol Roller Derby and Severn Roller Torrent. Since April, the teams have been battling it out in two groups to determine who will go through to the final.

The final, hosted by the South West Angels of Terror, takes on a legendary TV show theme - Gladiskaters! After an exciting round of group stages, battling it out for the top positions are South West Angels of Terror and Dorset Roller Derby, along with Cornwall Roller Derby’s Atlantic Breakers and Bristol Harbour Harlots who will fight for third and fourth positions.

As last year’s champions, SWAT will be working hard to retain their trophy. The team, who train in Exeter and Taunton, consists of girls based all over Somerset and Devon from a variety of professions: Teachers, Vets, Marketing Executives and Photographers to name but a few. On weekends and evenings the kneepads and helmets come out, and a Roller Derby team is formed, ready to take on the competition.
