This Girl Can in Exeter
With the launch of the high profile national campaign This Girl Can, Exeter based South West Athletics is echoing this call to action by encouraging more women and girls into athletics and into coaching.
Director of Coaching Sonya Ellis has long been an advocate for more women coaches in sport and already has a number of athletes going through athletics coaching awards.
In addition, SW Athletics has taken on an apprentice assistant coach, Angela Lynn, who is a mother of two and has already successfully completed her coaching assistant’s award and is part way through her coach award, now helps out at their regular Monday and Wednesday night Mini and Junior athletics at Exeter Arena and during inclusive and conditioning work for older athletes.
Starting work at SW Athletics only this week is an Italian student, Francesca Ferroni, who has joined SW Athletics from the Training Partnership programme. Francesca too has come to join in and experience Sonya’s women coaches programme, as well as to help out with the Academy’s busy training schedule.
The SW Athletics team have been inspired by the This Girl Can campaign and have just launched a brand new women only athletics session on Monday nights from 7-8pm at Exeter Arena.
This is a session all about having fun and having a go. No previous experience is necessary and encourages a very relaxed and informal atmosphere.
“We’re all about having fun. If you’re having fun, you’ll be getting fit without even realising it” said Sonya Ellis.
Anyone can just come along and pay on the night, and the team are geared up to show Exeter that This Girl Truly Can.
