Junior tennis players battle it out at Flybe Tournament
On Saturday 28th February, Exeter Golf and Country Club’s hosted a 10 and under Flybe Mini Green Tennis tournament with players from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset taking part.
The fifteen entrants were split into three groups and took part in a round robin event.
The group winners were Toby Watts (Tarka), Ben Johnson (Exmouth) and Zac Brown (Exmouth) who won all of their four matches.
Billy Turl (Exeter Golf and Country Club) was involved in two of the closest matches. The very first match of the competition, Billy v Toby, was decided by a tie-break with Billy demonstrating his athleticism and court coverage to match Toby’s impressive groundstrokes. Toby prevailed 7-5 in the final game of an epic opening match.
During the third round of matches, Billy once again found himself in a tie-break, this time against Adam Jenner (Ilfracombe). Every point was fought for during some incredibly long rallies and this time Billy was victorious, claiming the tie-break 7-4.
Perhaps the best match of the tournament saw Zac Brown and Jude Shea (Torquay) competing in the rain during the penultimate round. Neither player let the deteriorating conditions affect their tennis and after a lengthy battle it was Zac who came through 5-3 to preserve his winning record.
Tournament organiser James Temple commented that “it was great to see all six courts full with some fantastic matches played across all three groups. All fifteen players competed well and it was a credit to them that they didn’t let the increasingly heavy rain affect their tennis”.
Exeter Golf and Country Club is hosting a 9 and under Flybe Mini Orange competition on Saturday 7th March where twelve players will be looking to gain vital points towards the Flybe Mini Masters Leaderboard ahead of the Grand Finals which take place at the end of March.
