Puzzletree hosts sports day for all
The Puzzletree in Okehampton is hosting a fun day of sport on Monday 24 June from 10am-4pm.
This year’s event is the third in succession that the Puzzletree has organised for people with learning disabilities.
The fun day is free to attend, and includes a variety of sports to encourage people to try new activities, as well as those they already enjoy.
Sports include boccia, badminton, volleyball, short tennis, seated exercise, velcro targets, dance, fencing, TaiChi, croquet, table tennis, exercise machines, basketball, parachute games, football and frisbee throwing.
All the games are achievable for people who are wheelchair dependant.
Research last year showed that participation in sports by people with disabilities, which is already below that of people with disabilities, is declining.
Cllr Stuart Barker, the Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for adult social care, said: “Our fun days are always popular, and they present a great opportunity for people to come and try new sports, or enjoy already familiar ones.
“Physical exercise is not only good for body and mind, but also for building one’s self confidence. And it can be a very enjoyable way of meeting people socially,” he said.
