Spitfires grounded in their opening game

The Exeter Spitfires started their first season in the South West Baseball League on Sunday with a crushing 33-0 loss at the reigning champions, the Plymouth Mariners.

It was clear from the start that the Mariners were obviously very confident, as they should have been given their position as the best local team playing against a very inexperienced Spitfires lineup, who had over half their team playing their first game.

Despite the loss, Exeter were able to draw some positives from the game. They were able to hold the Mariners scoreless in one inning thanks to good pitching and excellent catching in the outfield.

The Spitfires also started to get more players on the bases later in the game after struggling early on against strong Plymouth pitching. It was definitely a valuable experience for the Spitfires as they are now fully aware of what they are up against in their first season.

The club were also pleased to finally get to play a competitive game after training for the last few months. This Sunday Exeter travel to Paignton to take on the Torbay Barons who are in their second season.

The team hope to put up a stronger performance this week and are looking forward to a more positive experience in their second game.

The Exeter Spitfires continue to look for new players of all abilities. Training takes place at King George V Playing Fields on Topsham Road on Mondays at 6.30pm.
