Try out for team Teignbridge at the Youth Games trials
The Teignbridge trials for the Olympic-style ‘Devon Youth Games’ are here, and if you’re aged between 8 and 16 years, you can be a part of it!
Children and young people are encouraged to represent ‘team Teignbridge’ at the local trials of the forthcoming Devon Youth Games.
The free events, located across the district in a number of different locations throughout May and June, mean those taking part are in with a chance of being part of the district team at the Devon Youth Games event on Sunday 12 July at Paignton Academy, Torbay Velopark, Torbay Leisure Centre and Parkfield.
Teignbridge District Council and Torbay Council are organising the Devon Youth Games, previously known as Devon Games To Inspire. The event will see more than 800 young people from all over Devon compete in a variety of sports.
Trials are in a range of sports including badminton, triathlon, table tennis, skateboarding, BMX, netball, rugby, cricket, girls’ football, hockey, boccia, pan-disability football, athletics and gymnastics.
They’re taking place start at different placed across Teignbridge from Tuesday 5 May onwards. To see when each trial takes visit or to book a place visit: www.teignbridge.gov.uk/article/21491/Trial-Details
Participants that are selected to be part of the Devon Youth Games will get free transport, a free t-shirt and the chance to win medals for Teignbridge – not to mention a great day out!
To encourage children and young people to be part of it, local schools, clubs and coaches are also giving out ‘you’ve been spotted’ cards to potential participants.
Nikki Taylor, Teignbridge District Council’s Active Leisure Development Officer, said: “Teignbridge has always been really lucky to have a strong presence at the Games and it is hoped history will be repeated as we prepare to retain the title of Overall Winning Authority for the third consecutive year.
“We put our recent success down to the clubs, coaches, schools, teachers, parents and volunteers that deliver the trials, hours of training sessions, and the expertise to the teams in order for them to have the best experience of a county-wide Olympic style multi-sports event and celebration of sport.
“Whether you’re a participant experiencing it for the first time, or a volunteer at the Games you will have the chance to see and experience firsthand the nerves, the emotion, the determination, team work, sportsmanship, passion and pride that sport can bring out in us all.
“Sport encourages discipline, hard work and dedication. A Youth Games experience develops young people’s skills, confidence, respect, self-esteem and strength. It is far more than just one day!
“We’d love to see children and young people play their part by coming along to any of the trials on offer.”
