Yeovil Golf Club Celebrates a Fantastic Weekend of Junior Golf
Last Saturday the final round of Somerset Junior Golf League matches was held at Enmore Golf Club. Played on the hottest day of the summer the various matches were curtailed for safety reasons to nine holes. However the weather didn’t prevent some of the Yeovil team members from playing sizzling golf and recording winning scores.
Archie Tolman won the Division One competition with 21 stableford points, a score that was matched by his Division Two teammate Lewis Young who also won his division. Backed up by the rest of the Yeovil players it meant that the Club finished in a very credible third place in the league.
The members of Yeovil Golf Club are duly proud of their Junior Section and the dedication of its Junior Team.
Yeovil Golf Club Junior Open
This year’s Junior Open Competition had 53 entrants from 21 different golf clubs from Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset and Devon. There was some excellent golf on display which was matched by the friendliness of the competitors and their willingness to socialise with each other.
Yeovil’s Alex Elwick won the prize for the best boys gross score with a very good round of 72 and Molly Kington’s score of 79 saw the Weymouth Golf Club player take the best girls gross prize.
Monica Merritt, another Weymouth member, recorded the best girls nett score of 66 which was just one shot behind the best nett score for the boys that was posted by Ben Reynolds of Exeter Golf & Country Club. His nett 65 saw him win the overall gold medal and a golf shirt; but more importantly to have his name engraved on the Geoff Kite Trophy as the 2019 Yeovil Golf Club Junior Open Champion.
A large number of competitors and their families stayed for the formal presentation ceremony which was presided over by Club Captain, Dr John Gower. Before handing out a total of sixteen prizes, Dr Gower praised the many volunteers who had worked hard to make the day successful and the green keeping staff for presenting the course in such wonderful condition.
Amongst the other prize winners was Oliver Rogers from Wareham Golf Club who received the under 15s gold medal. Yeovil’s Lewis Young was nearest the pin on the par three 10th hole and Megan Withnall from Ferndown Golf Club took a similar girls prize on the par three 13th hole.
