Chantel McGregor plays at Exeter Corn Exchange
Imagine the tone of Robin Trower, the inspiration of Hendrix, the influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the energy of Bonamassa, the intensity of Walter Trout and the haunting vocal of Stevie Nicks all rolled into one... then let me introduce Chantel McGregor, one of the most exciting rock and blues musicians that the UK has ever produced! At the age of eight Chantel became the youngest person in the country to pass a Rock school exam and at 12, she was jamming in her native Bradford and evolving into an incredible musician.
Described as a prodigy, at 14 Chantel was told by major labels "great voice, but girls don't play guitar like that!" Wisely ignoring that advice, she enrolled at the world-renowned Leeds College of Music and became the first student in the college's history, to achieve a 100% pass mark, with 18 distinctions. Chantel left with a First Class Honours degree in Popular Music and a coveted prize, for outstanding musicianship.
Chantel has since stepped out in the pro-musician world and her stunning live performances are proving that this is rock blues for the new age, played by a musician born with an effortless virtuosity, peppered by flights of incendiary guitar and flanked by moments of poise, grace and fluidity...
A recent quote in 'Nightshift', Oxford's music magazine, reinforces this, "Chantel McGregor deserves to be held up as a messiah of blues-rock and given her own mountain,she doesn't strum or pick her guitar but almost bends and distorts it, as if she's channelling the ghost of Hendrix through her fingers"
When asked about performing on stage, Chantel said;
"Playing live to great audiences is one of the most wonderful feelings, I feel so lucky to be able to do something that I love, see the world and bring happiness to others through my music."
If you measure an artist’s prospects by the company they keep, then this Miss is clearly heading in the right direction, having been invited to perform on stage by Joe Bonamassa, the American blues supremo, on two of his tours so far!
Chantel's debut album, Like No Other, is a beautifully crafted compilation, that showcases her versatility and genuine talent, as a singer-songwriter!
On song writing, Chantel says;
"I really enjoy creating my own songs, it's a fantastic way of being able to say what I wouldn’t normally say in everyday life and getting my feelings out, writing for me is very therapeutic"
Also being part of the centenary album '100 Years of the Blues', in the company of the all time greats and 'Blues Fury', the new rock revolution, is testament to her highly regarded reputation in the music world!
Chantel was voted Young Artist of the Year in the British Blues Awards 2011, Female Vocalist of the Year in 2012 and is absolutely delighted to have been nominated for awards in two categories this year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Guitarist of the Year.
Despite being kept very busy touring the UK and playing in Europe and Scandinavia, Chantel is very proud to have been involved in the prestigious BBC Introducing Masterclass and the London Acoustic Guitar Show.
