Jurassic Classic soars to success

Over 1,000 cyclists took to their saddles last weekend (Sunday 11 August) for the second Jurassic Classic cycling event organised by Prostate Cancer UK, raising over £100,000 for the charity and putting the Jurassic Classic firmly on the cycling map.

Riders of all abilities – aged from 12 to 70 and from all over the country - gathered in East Devon to take part in the 100mile, 100km or 50km routes experiencing fantastic weather and stunning scenery along the Jurassic coastline. The event was a sell-out, with the number of riders taking part on the day exceeding all expectations.

Topping up the tired cyclists were feed stations run by dedicated volunteers. In Aylesbeare a group of local ladies came together and filled the village hall with welcome cakes and snacks.

The ride finished at Exmouth Rugby Club where a range of entertainments awaited participants and their supporters. From bouncy castles and face painting to sports massage therapy and mechanical support, there was something for all.

After receiving their medals, participants and their supporters tucked into local fare, including Devonshire ice-cream and pasties. A tent dressed with a Tea For Victory theme enabled people to enjoy hot beverages and delicious cakes whilst supporting another of Prostate Cancer UK’s initiatives.

Broadcaster and businessman Mark Goodier, who took part in the 100km route, said: “I had a fantastic day. The ride was very challenging but the spectacular scenery, well stocked feed stations and amazing atmosphere kept me going. Having been greeted with a medal at the finish line I then enjoyed a massage and pasty, which was great!”

“I lost my father-in-law to prostate cancer, so I know only too well how important these cycling events are, as they draw attention to and raise funds for a very important cause. Prostate Cancer UK has done an excellent job creating this event and I’m certainly planning to sign up again next year.”

Participants raised over 100,000 pounds to help us provide dedicated support and information to men and their families affected by prostate cancer and to fund vital research to help fight the disease.”
