Summer successes help to boost Seaton Regeneration
A successful programme of summer events in Seaton, along with a number of initiatives to improve the marketing of the town and increase business opportunities, has led to a general buzz of excitement and optimism for the town’s future.
These successes as well as very positive progress on the Seaton Jurassic Coast Discovery Centre were welcomed this week by the Seaton Regeneration Programme Board.
Twenty five businesses have started up in the town over the last 18 months and the number of empty shops has reduced from nine to three over the last 12 months reflecting an increase in business confidence going forward. East Devon District Council (EDDC) plan to support further business growth with the development of new workshops at Fosseway and Colyford Depot. These are in addition to the Riverside Workshops which EDDC confirmed will remain.
Cllr Ian Thomas, EDDC’s Cabinet Member for Economy, and Chair of the Board, said “Everyone around the table, from the private, voluntary and public sector, could feel the seed change underway in Seaton and is committed to build on this momentum with the programme of regeneration projects. A revitalised Seaton will ensure a prosperous future for residents, visitors and businesses with a unique blend of educational and enjoyable attractions and a vibrant town centre.”
Events have included the launch of an artisan market, Tai Chi by the sea, Party in the Park and the Natural Seaton Festival.
Improvements included a bouncy castle and deck chairs on the seafront, improved signage around the town, new murals promoting the Grizzly Run and a new website for the Tourist Information centre (www.seatontic.co.uk).
The Board welcomed the visitor improvements at the Axe Valley Wetlands including the new education centre, upgrade of the toilets and new pathways. The Stop Line Way cycle path should also be complete by spring 2014 following the appointment of contractors for the next part of the track.
The proposed Seaton Jurassic Coast Discovery Centre is making good progress with the success of the Stage 1 Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) allocation of £56,500. This has allowed the team to prepare and submit a bid to HLF for a further £500,000 towards the overall project costs. The project team is also pursuing a number of other funding opportunities. Work should start on site during 2014 with a proposed opening of the centre in 2015.
Cllr Steph Jones, East Devon District Council’s Seaton Champion, said “The summer has seen a genuine positive feel around the town. Now it is important to build on this, using the energy and real commitment that exists around the town, to continue the regeneration programme and ensure a revitalised town for residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come.”
The Seaton Regeneration Programme Board consists of representatives from the private and voluntary sectors along with members of Devon County Council, East Devon District Council, Seaton Town Council.
