Devon poet wins a Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award
Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award was celebrated on National Poetry Day (Thursday 3 October 2013).
The biggest stars in British poetry gathered at the Southbank Centre to celebrate National Poetry Day. The day-long event began with a special ceremony to commend the 15 poets from around the world who won a Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award.
Among the 15 winners was Emma Lister, 16, from Devon. To win an award of this stature is a huge achievement. The prize has launched the careers of many of the UK's most successful poets, so Jessica has a flourishing writing career ahead of her.
The competition has broken all the records to become the world’s largest poetry prize. The winners were selected by acclaimed poets Hannah Lowe and David Morley from a record-breaking number of entries; with 7,478 young poets (aged 11-17) entering from across the globe – a staggering 75 countries in total. The 15 winning poets were gathered alongside 85 commended young poets.
