The Big night out: An evening with Shane Richie to help Kibera
This month has the opportunity to make a difference with a special fundraising dinner supporting life-saving work in Kibera, the biggest slum in Africa.
The evening will see live music, magic and comedy as well as an auction with a chance to win holiday accommodation in Italy and Spain.
The event will be headlined by Shane Richie and The Prelude. One of the country's premier funk bands fronted by the actor and comedian Shane Richie.
Kibera houses nearly 1m people living in extreme poverty and dangerous, unhygienic conditions. One in five children living there will die before they’re five years old due to disease.
When he saw the conditions that people faced in their day-to-day lives Simon Almond, managing director of Devon Contract Waste decided to make a difference.
Using their many years of industry experience Simon and the Devon Contract Waste Team have been setting on a team to help remove waste from Kibera and prevent some of the disease it causes
Since they got involved 16 months ago they have hired a full time crew to gather and clear whole areas of the slum.
Working closely with local charity Riziki and UK based Kibera in Need they have gone from, strength to strength being able to provide uniforms and safety equipment to the crew.
“One of the biggest problems we’ve had is the perceptions of the work” Said Simon, “Those doing the clear-ups were being called dirty boys and were looked down on by other people.
“The idea isn’t just to provide a service but to educate people, change attitudes to waste and get people to accept responsibility for it.”
The next step in the process is to provide a waste collection vehicle to transfer the waste from Kibera to the dump.
This will greatly cut the costs of the operation and put them much closer to their goal of a fully sustainable waste management service in Kibera.
To do your part in helping Kibera become cleaner and safer whilst enjoying a three course meal and top quality entertainment.
The event will take place on the 30 November and will feature music from The Prelude, Rachael Lang with Mammoth Funk, The Blues and Twos and DJ Lee Waller.
The will also be comedy from Luke Montague and magic from Oz Symons. The evening will be topped off with a charity auction with the chance to win holiday accommodation in Italy and Spain or even spend a day as a Zookeeper in Dartmoor Zoo.
