Loving Anita needs a home

Anita the Akita formerly known as Bullet - a very unsuitable name for a beautiful girl who was found wandering the streets of Bradford. She was picked up as a stray and placed in the dog pound and given seven days for her owner to find her.

It was discovered she was micro chipped and the owner was contacted. He claimed that he had sold her on but nevertheless he would come and collect her, presumably to sell her on again.

He didn’t show up and Anita’s time was up. Seven days had gone by and she was scheduled to be put to sleep.

To us, living in the South West , this may seem a draconian remedy for stray dogs, but where she came from it is the norm especially for dogs like Akitas. They are perceived as status dogs by certain groups of the population and can be used in many undesirable ways and sold on time and time again. Sad to say, sometimes it is probably better that they are put to sleep than live a life of misery in the wrong hands.

Anita was lucky because the dog pound owner contacted ‘Friends of Akitas’, one of three small and struggling charities set up to help unfortunate akitas. After frantic phoning around and searching for a suitable rescue space willing to take on Anita and working against the clock, as the pound will not keep the dogs longer than they need to because time and space equal money, Arc Rescue in Ottery St Mary answered the call.

A transport call was put out on Face Book and a series of drivers , in relays, made the mammoth trip of over five and half hours to transport Anita from Bradford to Devon. All of these transporters are volunteers and freely give their time and petrol to help the dogs.

Anita is now living in luxury in her kennel at Arc Rescue but what she craves is a real home of her own. She is two years old and has the most beautiful bright red fur. She seems a very happy, good natured, loving dog if slightly tubby. We are pretty sure she hasn’t experienced much in her short life but seems willing to learn.

Akitas are not for everyone and she is pretty big and strong but with the right home she will give someone loads of love and total devotion. That’s what akitas do.
