Builders, architects and their clients have scooped prestigious awards for building excellence in projects across Teignbridge, West Devon and the South Hams.

A wide range of housing projects were honoured in the Devon Building Control Partnership Building Excellence Awards with winners including school buildings, the conversion of a large mill and reconstruction of a number of listed buildings in Dartmouth that had been severely damaged by fire.

Projects were judged on criteria including compliance with building regulations, accessibility and inclusive environment, sustainability and customer satisfaction. Winning entries were nominated by professional surveyors based at all three councils. They had visited the sites to inspect the building work during 2013.

The award ceremony was held on Friday 4 July at Old Forde House, Newton Abbot. It was opened by Cllr Terry Pearce, Chairman of the Partnership and West Devon Borough Councillor.

Winners were:

Chairman's Award - 1 & 5 Higher Street and 5, 6 & 7 Fairfax Place, Dartmouth

Best Conversion - Staverton Mill, Staverton

Best Educational Build - Newton Abbot College, Old Exeter Road, Newton Abbot

Best Extension - North Cuma, Drewsteignton

Best Individual Dwelling - Milton House, Ditch End, East Portlemouth, Salcombe

Best Multiple Housing - 1-9 Waterside Apartments, Weech Road, 2 Church Street, Dawlish

Best Social & Affordable Housing - Lane End Close, Slapton

Cllr Pearce said: “My congratulations go to all those who worked as teams to bring forward these quality projects. These awards acknowledge the high standards of building excellence in the partnership area and reflect the hard work and professionalism of all those involved.

“Safe, sustainable and attractive buildings can make a huge difference to local communities and we are delighted to be able to recognise the achievements of local builders, architects, developers and individual home and business owners.”

Cllr John Goodey, Teignbridge District Council’s Executive spokesman for Housing and Planning and Partnership member, said: “Congratulations to all the winners. It’s great to see so many innovative projects across the partnership area. “The partnership marks its tenth anniversary this year and it plays an important role in ensuring buildings are safe, accessible and comply with building regulations. It’s wonderful to be able to promote our local businesses and reward them for a job well done.”

Cllr Hilary Bastone, South Hams Executive board member of Devon Building Control Partnership said: "It is particularly gratifying that the standard remains so high in the tenth anniversary of the founding of Devon Building Control Partnership. These awards produce some excellent entries every year and as a ward councillor it is great to see that the Fairfax Place fire restoration at Dartmouth has won a second award.

"The way that the fire ravaged centre of the town has been so beautifully restored with great assistance from the Conservation and Planning Officer, Richard Gage, at South Hams, it is heartening to see it being given a double accolade.”

Devon Building Control Partnership was established in 2005 and provides the building control service on behalf of South Hams District Council, Teignbridge District Council and West Devon Borough Council. The Partnership is based in Teignbridge’s Forde House offices, Newton Abbot, and offers a quality service committed to maintaining high standards in building design and construction.
