Saddle up for Devon's Jurassic Classic
Well over a thousand cyclists are expected to come to Exmouth on August 17th, to participate in one of the West Country’s most exciting and beautiful cycling events, the Jurassic Classic, for Prostate Cancer U.K.
In its third year, the route offers riders distances of 50km, 100km, or 100 miles through historic Devon towns such as Budleigh Salterton, Ottery St Mary, and Charmouth, as well as the breathtaking scenery in areas such as The Otter Vale, Peak Hill, and Exmouth. All of the distances offer a challenging ride, and this year’s fundraising hopes to break last year’s impressive total of £110 000.
The event comes on the back of the successful inauguration of the Saxon Classic, set up by Prostate cancer U.K. this year, which raised over £25 000. Last year, Prostate Cancer UK’s Head of Events Andy Sallnow commented on his hopes for the main Devon event in 2014:
“The Jurassic Classic was a huge success this year with over 1,100 people taking on those Devon climbs. We’re delighted to be returning to Devon and we hope even more people will join us in 2014. Prostate cancer is set to become the most common of all cancers by 2030 so we urge people to sign up and fundraise to help us fight this disease.”
Indeed, it’s a cause worth fighting for. Prostate Cancer is likely to become the most common of all cancers by 2030. It already kills 728 men per year in Devon alone, with 250 000 men already living with the disease in the U.K. Mark Bishop, the Head of Fundraising for Prostate Cancer U.K. said:
“Every year over 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. With one man dying every hour, and we are urging people to sign up and help Prostate Cancer UK support men, provide vital information and find answers by funding research.”
The challenge, which begins and ends at Exmouth Rugby Club at 7am, will be fully signed, with well-stocked food stations along the route, and a medal awarded at the end. Timing chips will also be provided. As well as watching their friends and loved ones, supporters can take advantage of a variety of entertainment, events and activities planned on the day.
The entry fee is £28 for the 160 and 100 km events and £18 for the shorter route for those that are happy to fundraise £50 or more. Sportive riders will pay £45 for the longer two distances and £30 for the shorter one.
