Work starts on Exmouth sea wall
An 80 tonne crane has taken up residence on Exmouth Pierhead as nearly £1 million of work starts to replace the sea wall.
This is the final element of infrastructure work in the redevelopment of Exmouth Quay.
The wall replacement is a necessary first step before construction work starts in earnest early next year on a five storey development of 14 waterside apartments.
Eagle One Homes has commissioned Devon firm, Teignmouth Maritime Services, to undertake the piling work. Over the next six weeks nearly 400 tonnes of new steel piling will be lifted into place to reinforce the Pierhead.
Chris Fayers, Director, Eagle One Homes says: “This is the start of work to create a superb new development at Pierhead of 14 contemporary homes with waterfront views. We are making a substantial investment to ensure that the sea wall is in good condition and will continue to protect the marina for future generations.”
“We undertook the diving work last year to survey the state of the seawall so it’s great to be back on site to deliver the work,” said Paul Hunt, Project Manager of Teignmouth Maritime Services. “We estimate it will take about six weeks. We will be using a vibration piling process to reduce the disturbance to those living nearby but there will be some noise as these are substantial improvements.”
Once the piling work is complete a programme of improvements will take place later this autumn to resurface the car park, revitalise the public realm and enhance the entry to Exmouth Quay.
The development at Pierhead will include 14 - one, two and three bedroom apartments - as well as three commercial units which will be available to local businesses to rent or buy. The apartments will be housed in a unique curved contemporary building quite different from the style of existing apartments at Exmouth Quay.
Pierhead is the last phase of the regeneration of Exmouth Quay. The area has been transformed over the last decade from a run-down former docks to a superb development of homes clustered around the marina and with fabulous views out over the estuary.
