An Exmouth dental surgery is encouraging anyone suffering discomfort with their dentures to contact their dentist, after experiencing a surge in older people asking for help and advice.

Around 3.7 million people in Britain currently wear dentures and research shows that many of them have difficulty chewing ‒ and even speaking.

“We are increasingly seeing patients who have put up with badly fitting dentures for many years,” said Rob Gosling, Clinical Dental Technician at Select Dental.

“There is no reason for dentures to be fitted badly in the first place, even though many of them are mass produced. It may simply be the case that the older generation doesn’t always have the confidence to complain or speak up about their discomfort.”

Rob feels so strongly about the right to pain-free dentures that he designed the Palette Advanced Denture System, which uses technology, technique and materials to create extremely comfortable and natural-looking dentures.

“Each tooth is handcrafted and placed in the most natural position,” explained Rob. “This means that facial contours lost in the ageing process can sometimes be restored.”

Rob says that anyone who is experiencing discomfort should approach their dentist for guidance on what help is available.

“Uncomfortable dentures can have a severe impact on quality of life, and with a growing ageing population the dental community needs to make sure that every denture-waiting patient has teeth that not only do a job, but feel right for them.

“Some people prefer implants and these are an excellent solution too, but many older people are still rightly consider dentures to be a cost-effective solution,” added Rob.

According to the World Health Survey initiated by the World Health Organization, complete tooth loss affects approximately 30 per cent of people aged 65–74 worldwide.
