Maynard girls celebrate medical offers
Maynard girls have once again excelled in their university applications, receiving offers in a full range of courses; these include the most competitive courses in the country at the most prestigious universities, with 53% of girls choosing to study STEM subjects (Science, Technology, English and Maths), bucking national trends.
The school is especially delighted to announce that seven girls have received offers for Medical and Veterinary places, 19% of all our applicants, with 78% of all Medical/Veterinary applicants being successful.
Indeed, students have achieved outstanding success across the board - other highlights include two offers to study English at Cambridge, offers for Mathematics at UCL, Economics at UCL and LSE, Engineering at Durham and Classics at St Andrew’s.
The girls’ achievements in STEM subjects are particularly notable as they contrast national trends ; although girls outperform boys overall in STEM subjects at GCSE, the question, “Why don’t more girls study science and maths?” is raised on a regular basis, with the answers ranging from gender stereotyping to a lack of confidence. According to research by the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA), girls in single sex schools are empowered to feel confident in whatever career path they choose. They are 75% more likely to take Maths A-level, 70% more likely to take Chemistry, two and a half times as likely to take Physics and over twice as likely to take most languages. In sum, they are uninhibited when choosing their future career pathways.
“I am thrilled that our students have been so successful with their university applications” explains Tom Hibberd, Director of Sixth Form at The Maynard. “This has been possible due to their impressive examination performance, particularly in “facilitating subjects” and their willingness to develop themselves holistically through other academic opportunities, such as the EPQ (The Extended Project Qualification) and University Essay Prizes. They have also performed splendidly at interview.
I am especially, pleased, though, that all of our girls have been able to pursue their chosen dreams – 86% of the girls have gained offers at Russell Group universities, however, those that have wanted to pursue a particular calling, such as a degree in Land Management at Harper Adams, a degree in Events Management or an internship with KPMG have also been rewarded for their endeavours.”
