Ice castle designed to attract crowds to a Minnesota mall
The Mall of America in Minnesota will bring a one-of-a-kind experience to visitors from around the world known as "Ice Castles" - a castle that will stand more than 40 feet tall at its peak and span two acres.
The Ice Castle is made of icicles organically grown from 4 million gallons of water and then fused together, joining 50 large ice towers together to create a series of shimmering archways, tunnels, walls and caverns, say the organisers.
The team leader behind the structure is an artist named Brent Christensen from Utah. For the past several years, Christensen has been molding icicles together to form tall castles. He has learned that he could make his own icicles by spraying water.
Over, the centre courtyard looms the largest frozen tower, reaching more than 40 feet high while latticed icicles connect the icy columns to the tower, creating roomy caverns. Several “Throne Rooms” with a chair large enough sit several people are inside, with the the castle taking a magical look as thousands of LED multi-colored lights illuminate the ice from within at night.
Art Beats, who recently profiled the Ice Castle, says that "the castle combines 50 towering ice formations producing a series of caverns, walls, archways and tunnels".
"Growing an Ice Castle is completely weather dependent. As you are aware, this winter, Minnesota has had unpredictable weather! This means that as it stays cold, the Ice Castle will continue to grow, even while it’s open for you to visit. Because it is always changing and growing, we recommend that you plan to visit multiple times for the ultimate experience" said the Mall of America in a statement on their website. (NewsPoint)
