Council raises the flag for Exeter Pride
Councillors, staff and representatives from voluntary and public sectors attended a flag flying ceremony at County Hall to mark Exeter Pride, which takes place today (16 May).
The ‘rainbow flag’ was raised by Devon County Council’s Chief Executive, Phil Norrey.
Mr Norrey said: “The county council is delighted to mark the 7th Exeter Pride event by flying the rainbow flag outside our Exeter Headquarters. We have come a long way over the past few years but there is still much to do ensure that to ensure that members of the LGBT feel safe in being ‘out’.”
Devon County Council Cabinet Member, Barry Parsons, says: “Society needs to have full confidence in allowing ‘individual difference’ to flourish. Irrespective of life choices, we should always encourage the pursuit of happiness as opposed to society, at times, trying to impose a view of how individuals should seek to be happy.
“The flag flying ceremony at County Hall is testament to Devon County Council’s commitment to treating all individuals equally. It is a feature of this Council that, rightly, has significant cross party support.”
The first Gay Pride was held in New York City following the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and is now held annually in many cities across the world.
Pride parades aim to address the oppression experienced by many LGB&T people in society; by promoting self-affirmation, dignity and rights through increased visibility and community celebration.
The 7th Exeter Pride begins with a parade along the High Street followed by activities and information in the Phoenix and Rougemont Gardens behind Exeter Library.
