What's in store at the Exmouth Festival?

Railway posters, a promenade performance of Jason and the Argonauts and a talk by author Tom Cox are amongst the happenings at Exmouth Festival.

This year’s Festival includes theatre, music, visual arts, westcountry traditions and activities for all the family. Highlights include:

• A commissioned artist will reinterpret the railway posters of the early 20th century, creating a new series of “Visit Exmouth” posters which will be displayed at railway stations from Paddington to Exmouth.

• Four of Swords will be performing their family-friendly adaptation of Jason and the Argonauts in the abandoned Rolle College campus. In this promenade performance of the Greek myth, the audience start off as festival-goers attending the Colcheans' midsummer celebrations, and by the end they may well have been co-opted as Argonauts themselves. Jason and the Argonauts tells the tale of Prince Jason and his maritime adventures – a perfect fit for the seaside town and port of Exmouth.

• There will be a talk by Tom Cox, author of eight books, including four about his cats and two about his adventures as Britain's most inept golf professional. Tom writes a monthly column for The Guardian about his life in the Devon countryside – The 21st-century Yokel

• The mix of local and nationally known bands includes Bella Hardy, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Singer of the Year 2014, with her new album With The Dawn, a collection of self-composed songs which tell a story of travel, of choices, of lessons unlearned, and also of hope.

• In partnership with Exeter’s Bike Shed Theatre, the Festival is presenting a month of new and emerging theatre, cabaret and comedy at Exmouth’s 99-seat Blackmore Theatre.

This is the 19th year of the festival which has grown from a celebration of local music into a multi artform platform for new, emerging and national talent. The Festival has special artist commissions and partnerships with some of the area’s top arts organisations.

There will be a West Country Traditions Day on the Strand and events throughout the town including , theatre, comedy and cabaret, literature events, workshops and activities for adults and children.

Adult and family workshops at the Kennaway Centre include embroidery, architectural drawing, wire sculptures, Japanese book binding and wire sculptures.

The Festival takes place throughout the town from May 22 to 28. Many of the Festival events are free and more than 40,000 visitors are expected in Exmouth during the festival period. More information is available on the Festival website: http://www.exmouthfestival.org.uk.
