Exeter ladies prepare double blow for cancer at Race for Life 10k
Hundreds of ladies are preparing to give cancer ‘double trouble’ at Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life by taking part in the 10k event at Westpoint Exeter this month.
Race for Life 10k will take place on Sunday, 26 July and over 600 determined ladies have already signed up to show the disease that hell hath no fury like a woman in pink.
Event organisers are calling on mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and workmates who want to take on the challenge to sign up as soon as possible.
The 10k event takes place at the same venue as the 5k course. Both are non-competitive and participants can walk, jog or run their way to the finish line.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Marathon events which raises millions of pounds every year to help beat 200 different types of cancer.
Ruth Chamings, Cancer Research UK’s Devon Event Manager, said: “We understand that some women might feel daunted by the prospect of upping their distance from 5k to 10k, but the atmosphere on the day is incredibly supportive. The reality is that the event offers the perfect opportunity to try a new challenge in a nurturing environment, with like-minded women committed to an amazing cause.
“Every hour, more than three people are diagnosed with cancer in the South West*. That’s why, whether you’re a novice or a running pro, we need you to lace up your trainers and limber up for Race for Life 10k. It’s an achievable challenge and we’re urging women of all shapes and sizes to sign up today.
“Race for Life 10k is the perfect opportunity to push your fitness and fundraising that little bit further. Whether you walk, jog or run, every step you take will help bring us one step closer to the day when all cancers are cured.”
Last year, 966 women took part in Race for Life 10k in Exeter and raised a fantastic £71,043. This year, organisers need 1000 women and girls to rally together to help raise £75,000 for vital research.
Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of more men, women and children affected by cancer.
Ruth continued: “We’ve got cancer on the run. More people are surviving than ever before. But one in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lives. And that’s why we urgently need as many women as possible to sign up for Race for Life 10k now.
“Our aim is that one day everyone will beat cancer. The more research we fund, the sooner that day will come. So ladies, it’s time to pull on your leggings, join Race for Life’s pink army and show cancer who’s boss.”
