Jamil sets his sights on British Curry Awards

Jamil Miah, founder of Denley's Essence of India in Topsham, is hoping to garner some all-important support from fans of the popular Indian restaurant for the chance of winning a prestigious British Curry Award later this year. Having been shortlisted four times already, since 2009, Jamil says he is excited about the possibility of coming away with a grand prize this year.

Jamil says: “With over 200,000 nominations received last year, every person’s vote counts, so we are asking all our loyal customers to help us in our goal of winning one of these esteemed awards.”

Established in 2005 by British entrepreneur and restaurateur Enam Ali, the British Curry Awards continues to gain momentum each year. Taking place at a star-studded black tie gala dinner in London on Monday 30 November, the Awards ceremony is broadcast to over 200 countries around the world.

Home Secretary, Theresa May, was last year’s guest of honour and said: “It’s not hard to see why the Prime Minister and others have called these the ‘Curry Oscars’. The British curry industry really is one of Britain’s greatest success stories. Through hard work and innovation, you’ve built a vibrant industry, which generates wealth, promotes growth and employs tens of thousands of people.”

Jamil continues: "Denley's has gone from strength to strength over the last few years – our kitchen has 120 combined years’ experience in preparing Indian cuisine and Denley's Curry School, which we launched last year, is proving a huge hit with people wanting to learn more about the practicalities of curry making with personal tuition from highly trained chefs.

"We have not only incorporated a huge amount of new and delicious dishes into our menu using high quality, fresh and, where possible, locally sourced ingredients, we’ve also worked hard on making the restaurant extra special. Our VIP room with its personal chef, is proving massively popular, and we have already had lots of groups, from families to businesses looking to book for special occasions.”

Having run Indian restaurants since 1996, Jamil has prepared and served well over a million Indian meals and his vast experience of the industry is apparent throughout his restaurants, menus and cookery classes alike.
