New team Teignmouth Thunderbirds (TBirds) Cougars moved clear on top of the division six ladder in the Exeter Netball League after a classy 33-19 win over WestExe Bobcats on Wednesday 21st October.

Jaimie Rosser GA, teamed with Kay Drake GS scored the majority of TBirds’s goals to make it three wins from three and open up a 20 goal buffer over contender Thompson Jenner Titans for second place in the division.

It was another encouraging display from the new Back to Netball Club squad, who largely controlled proceedings.  After an even start, the TBirds began to dominate in the second quarter, when Player of the Match Claire Tooth playing Centre stepped up her mid-court defence to tip and intercept the WestExe attack. That opened up space for wing attack and Captain Dani Kearns, who surged forward and to release the pass into the formidable shooting duo of Rosser and Drake.

TBirds defenders Leanne Goldspink and Jess Sheardown kept their cool under pressure, took possession and gained control of the WestExe goal circle helping to unleash the attack in quarter three, through the court to the shooters who made no mistake from close range.

The Bobcats eventually got reward for their toil in quarter four, when their Player of the Match Bryony Phillips helped to ensure an even score for the fast WestExe squad, but TBirds were able to stamp out the attempted comeback to seal the win.

Coach and Finalist in the 2015 Teignbridge Sports Personality Awards Angela Rimmer commented, “It’s still early days, but I’m proud of the performance of TBirds so far, especially as the majority of players are brand new to netball league competition”.
