Police are appealing for witnesses after a man died following a collision near Barnstaple.

John Spurling (pictured), 58, from Barnstaple, who was driving the car invovled and was the only occupant in the vehicle, died at the scene.

The car collided with a hedge and rolled on the B3232 between Charlacottt Cross and Prospect Corner near Newton Tracey at around 11.30am on Sunday 24 January.

The car involved was a blue and red DRK, a two-seated and three-wheeler open-top vehicle. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

John’s family have paid tribute to him by saying: “John’s tragic accident was whilst driving his three-wheeler DRK car that he had owned for nearly 20 years.  He loved using this on fine days, enjoying the North Devon countryside.

“Unfortunately he only got to spend four years in the area but he greatly appreciated the way of life here.

“John leaves behind his wife Karen, and two daughters Ellie, 15, and Sam, 13, who were the love of his life.”

Highways attended the scene to assist with road closures. The B3232 was closed for around five hours while a forensic examination of the scene took place.

An investigation is being carried out by the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact them on 101 quoting reference 293 of 24 January.
