Exeter Labour pledge to increase police presence
We will work with Devon & Cornwall Police to increase the number of police officers and PCSOs on the streets of our city, say Exeter Labour.
Exeter was one of the first cities to pioneer neighbourhood policing, and the faith in that form of policing is now seen nationwide with the introduction of Police Community Support Officers.
In the “Stronger Exeter” survey, Exeter's residents were clear that visible police presence, including PCSOs, is the most important factor in keeping Exeter safe.
Exeter Labour Group's Leader, Pete Edwards said: "When we asked Exeter residents what a Stronger Exeter meant for them, we received over 5000 responses. While the majority of residents said they feel safe in Exeter, anti¬social behaviour and drunkenness were the main reasons why people sometimes feel unsafe, particularly in the city centre.
"The trouble is Devon and Cornwall Police have lost over 500 officers from the force because of Tory cuts.
"We will work with the new Police and Crime Commissioner to fight for more funding, but we pledge to share resources with Devon and Cornwall Police to increase the number of bobbies on the beat in Exeter".
This is a view shared by Gareth Derrick, Labour's candidate for the Devon & Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner.
Mr Derrick said: "The Tories promised to protect the Police, yet they have made deep cuts at a time when the demands on neighbourhood policing are on the rise.
“Exeter is clearly suffering from a reduced police presence due to the loss of over 500 officers from the force in recent years.
“My task as PCC, while fighting for more funding, will be to try and get a more effective local policing solution for Exeter and elsewhere in the region. I would want to work with the City Council closely, and share resources if possible, to ensure the city is safe from crime and anti-social behaviour.”
